DUI and Judgement

Several people think that they can drive after drinking alcohol; they feel that it just fine to have a couple of drinks. You may look so fine and normal and not appears not intoxicated but for others, you may.

No doubt fifty states of America set a legal limit of .08 for BAC (Breath alcohol concentration) because according to some tests, small amount of alcohol intake has a great effect on driver’s physical and driving skills.

To give you some insights on how alcohol impairs your judgment and driving, here are some studies from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It shows how a driver can be impaired on different level of BAC.

  • At the .02 BAC level, there will be slight body warmth, some loss of judgment, change in mood, decline in visual functions and decline in ability to multi-tasking.
  • At the .05 BAC Level, impaired judgment, loss of small muscles control, lowered alertness, reduced coordination and ability to track moving things, difficult steering and delay response in emergency situation.
  • At the .08 BAC Level, if you reach this stage, your own driving skills may be seriously impaired. Muscles coordination can be poor; hearing and concentration is impaired, harder to detect danger, short term memory loss, impaired perception and reduced information processing capability.

The level of intoxication also differs and varies on each individual. Take note that on your first drink, impairment begins. It is enough to reason to conclude that is not safe to drink and drive.
